I'm always nervous going into books by authors I've never heard of before because I hate being disappointed. I imagine everyone does, right? The blurb caught my eye, it sounded good, so I signed up for an ARC. I am glad to report there was no disappointment whatsoever with this one.
Trouble Walks In had all the good stuff to keep me entertained. The romance, the heat between the sheets, the suspense. It all blended together to bring the story of Ronan and Maddy to life.
Maddy moved to New York last year, trying to escape the tragic reality that became her life. After a decade together, she lost Rick, her boyfriend, while he was doing what he loved. Fighting fires. So although Ronan is an attractive, viral specimen, she wants no emotional attachments. Especially to a cop. A cop's job is dangerous. Maddy doesn't expect Ronan to break down her walls one by one though.
"It wasn’t a merely a job for men like Ronan—it was a calling and a way of life. Being a policeman would always be a part of who he was. It was woven through the fiber of his very soul, and there was nothing— and no one— that would ever change it."
Ronan has wanted Maddy since high school but her and Rick were practically hip to hip for a decade. He made Maddy happy though, which in turn made him happy. Rick was a good man and it was tragic the way he died but he wasn't going to let Maddy drown any further in her grief. It was time for her to stop hiding and start living again. Ronan, along with Bowser, his K-9 partner, slowly penetrated her walls of grief.
Throughout this heartwarming romance lays a serial killer. A killer after Real Estate Agents. Women Real Estate Agents. Sara keeps us on our toes, while we try to determine who the suspect is. One minute I would be sure I knew until someone else started being creepy. Then my guess went in a totally different direction. When the reveal finally came, while I was shocked, I wasn't surprised. She threw us hints along the way.
I'm happy with the way the romance played out. It wasn't rushed. It was sweet and heartwarming. Maddy had to struggle with the guilt about moving on too quickly and the fear about Ronan's job. Maddy had to learn that with love comes sacrifice and that it's okay to be afraid so long as you don't let that fear keep you from being happy.
Go forth and read, my lovelies.
Until next time,
Xoxo
