Book Review: Deception Island by Brynn Kelly

Title: Deception Island
Author: Brynn Kelly
Synopsis:
A stolen boy
A haunted soldier
A cornered con woman…
Rafe Angelito thought he was done with the demons from his past—until his son is kidnapped. Blackmailed into abducting an American heiress, the legionnaire soon finds himself trapped in paradise with a fiery, daring beauty who's nothing he expects…and everything he desires. But when he uncovers her own dark secret, Rafe realizes he's made a critical mistake—one that could cost him everything.
Playing body double for a spoiled socialite was supposed to be Holly Ryan's ticket to freedom. But when she's snatched off her yacht by a tall, dark and dangerous stranger, the not-quite-reformed con artist will make a desperate play to turn her captor from enemy to ally, by any means necessary.
Yet as scorching days melt into sultry nights, Holly is drawn to the mysterious capitaine, with his unexpected sense of honor and his searing touch. When they're double-crossed, they'll have to risk trusting each other in ways they never imagined…because in this deadly game of deception, it's their lives—and hearts—on the line.

Rafe is a French Foreign Legionnaire with a very dark, ugly and tortured past. He grew up as one of "The Lost Boys" until he got out. But now his past is catching up with him. A former acquaintance, and now leader, of The Lost Boys has kidnapped his son Theo. In order to free Theo, Rafe in exchange must kidnap an American Senators daughter, Laura Hyland, and hold her for the $20 million dollar ransom. But the twist that Rafe doesn't know? Laura is actually Holly. Holly is posing as Laura. Why? Because Holly got out of prison early, where she was setup to take the fall for the man she was in love with, by making a deal with Senator to be his spoiled socialite daughter, Laura, while she sails around on Laura's yacht. The money is good so she can't pass it up. It's not like anything can happen. Right?
Holly is one tough chick. But while she may be tough she also has a vulnerable side. Having been badly burned by love once before you can say she's wary. The last time she loved someone she landed in prison for 6 years. But Rafe doesn't give her much choice. Sure, he's not so hot about the whole love thing either because the last time he loved someone she died on him from an Aneurysm but there is something about Holly that he can't resist.
The romance between these two is sweet as much as it is sexy. This book is an action-packed romance with well written characters and one heck of a storyline. It touches on sensitive subjects such as child abuse and human trafficking. And its portrayed in such a way that you actually feel the horrors of said subjects.
For a debut novel the story was astounding. I can officially say I am a fan of Brynn Kelly and will be purchasing later work.
Good job Mrs. Kelly and congratulations on such a well put together and well written novel!
