Book Review: What Happens in Texas by Carolyn Brown

Title: What Happens in Texas
Author: Carolyn Brown
Hotness: 🔥

Synopsis:

Carolyn Brown brings her unique voice to this tale of twin sisters finding love in a small Texas town

Cathy Andrew's biological clock has passed the ticking stage and is dangerously close to "blown plumb up." While her twin sister Marty thinks settling down with one man is just a waste of good cowboys, Cathy wants it all: the perfect husband, the baby, and a little house right there in Cadillac. But even as the town is laying bets on whose wedding will be next, Cathy doesn't see happily-ever-after happening anytime soon.

Fortunately, Cathy and Marty have best friends who aren't afraid to stir up a ruckus-and if it means Cathy's got to bust out and set the town on its ear they'll back her up-no matter how hot things get.

I'm going to start out by saying that I DID enjoy this book. It may not seem like it from what I am gonna say though. That being said, this book was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a romance novel because that was how it was marketed. The blurb read as a romance story. What I got was Women's Lit with a small side dish of romance. I like Women's Lit but I wish I would have known going in that is what it was because I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Instead I kept waiting for the romance to come in. And it did. Just not enough to actually ENJOY the romance aspect of it. The main plot, or what should have been the main plot, was weak. It was barely there. There were so many characters and so many side plots I couldn't keep up. The 4 main characters, Cathy, Marty, Trixie and Darla Jean, were so hard to tell apart. There was no real depth to them so it was hard to connect with them.
Cathy, whom the story is suppose to be about, is engaged to Ethan.  He's in politics in this small town of Cadillac, Texas and Violet, his momma, runs the show. Literally. He's dull, boring and a momma's boy.
Marty, Cathy's twin sister, is the wild child. She doesn't feel the need to settle down and have children. She has a naughty little secret she's afraid to tell her sister.
Trixie, the twins best friend and business partner, has recently divorced her scoundrel excuse for a husband. She's all about payback. Until she isn't anymore.
Darla Jean, ex escort and now preacher, is a gem. She's good friends with the girls and always looking out for them and others.
Agnes, Cathy and Marty's aunt, is spunky. She's a firecracker even at her age. She doesn't take crap from anyone and she tells them like it is. I think I connected the most with her.
As with any small town you have it all. The small town secrets. The philandering ex-husband. The small town scandals. The home wrecking bimbo turned goody two shoes. The bad girl turning good. The small town feuds. The main one being between Agnes and Violet. Its been on going for ages and won't be finished until they're dead and gone. Those two together were a train wreck waiting to happen. Those two and their feud is what kept me turning those pages. Two old biddies literally duking it out? Who wouldn't love that?
This story is full of humor. Which I loved. I love books that make me laugh out loud as much as I love books that make me a blubbering fool. I loved that we got to see Cathy grow her backbone and stand up for herself. I loved that she finally found her happiness. Enough to put away her e-reader. *GASP* I know. Right?
Having said all that. I did enjoy this book. May have even loved parts of it. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely. As I've said, it was a good book.

I received a copy from Net Galley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. I have no affiliation with the publisher or author.
